Lately, I have been reflecting on the fear of those who need help having the courage to overcome the anxiety of seeking help. I have come to the conclusion that asking for help, especially in the form of seeking counseling or psychotherapy is not an easy feat for clients in need.
Why is it that we feel so comfortable going to our routine physical check-ups with our physicians? Why is it that we feel so comfortable going to our routine dental, chiropractic or other appointments in which we seek help without delay? When it comes to seeking help in the form of mental health, there exists a daunting anxiety and wavering of thoughts about the need to seek help. Is not the state of our mental health just as important as our physical body? What use is the body if the mind is unhealthy?
The purpose of this brief article is to continue the conversation and encourage others to become mental health advocates in their respective locales. As mental health professionals, we must never forget our duty to advocate and provide education to the public.
